7 Tips to become a salesperson in true sense
To the salesperson that is trying to become a salesperson in true sense, I offer these seven tips:
1. Study about sales
Buy book on sales and make your habit to read anything you see about the sales. Read interviews of established salespersons, listen podcasts by sales gurus. One of the best books I have read on sales is Ziglar on Selling: The Ultimate Handbook for the Complete Sales Professional by Zig Ziglar.
2. Know your product or service
Read manuals, specifications, instructions. Discuss with the product manager, developers. Spend time around the production area if its a product. For knowing service, visit to customers with the service providers, know exactly what the service is.
3. Know about your customers
Identify the target customer. Do some pilot sales. Try to understand, why your customer need your product or service and how does he/she use the product or service. Try to understand, what is the specific thing customer really likes in your product or service or what customer does not like.
4. Build your confidence
For developing the sales confidence, you should develop a “can do” attitude and need a lot of practice. Watch, how other experienced salespeople make the sales.
5. Build your network
Read my blog post Tips for Professional Networking, Professional Networking and other posts under Professional Networking Category. Pick up the phone and start making calls. Making first call is always scary but after first call you will gain better confidence.
6. Know about yourself
Carefully study yourself and decide what element of your personality attracts customers - your smile, your reception skills, your presentation skills, your body gesture, your promptness, your confidence, your reference or something else. Be sure to sale that first. Salespeople who are certain about their excellence almost always comfortably makes sales.
7. Use the product yourself first
When you use the product yourself, you will know all the features, benefits, values problems and its solutions. When you just present what you were told by others, you can not give your hundred per cent. When you know the product is good, you can push naturally.
